Tennessee Titans…Looking For a Return To The Super Bowl
When the AFL and NFL merged, the Houston Oilers became a part of professional football. Soon they moved to Tennessee, playing in Memphis for a season and eventually settling in Nashville. In 1999, the Tennessee Oilers changed their name and became the Tennessee Titans.
In Houston, the owner of the Oilers made constant demands for renovations and updates to their stadium, the first of which was granted. Funded entirely by taxes, 10,000 seats and 65 luxury boxes were added, costing the people of Houston more than 67 million dollars. The renovations were completed in the late 80’s.
By 1995, the owner was asking the city for an entirely new stadium, which at the time the city couldn’t afford. Soon after being turned down, the Houston Oilers moved to Nashville and became the Tennessee Oilers.
The first season in Tennessee was difficult for the Oilers. Throughout the 1997 season, the Oilers played their home games in Memphis while waiting for their stadium to be completed. Fans in both cities were angry about the situation and attendance at games was very low for most of the season. In 1998, the Oilers saw no reason to continue at the larger stadium and started playing their home games in Nashville at Vanderbilt Stadium until they could be moved into their own stadium in 1999.
It was during 1999 that the Tennessee team began using their new name, the Tennessee Titans, although they kept the Oilers heritage and history. 1999 was also the first year that the Titans made it to the Super Bowl, losing to the Rams.
Since their 1999 season, the Tennessee Titans have not yet made it to the Super Bowl again despite some very successful seasons. They are consistent contenders in the playoffs each year and have won their division title several times as well.
Although they have called a number of stadiums home, the Tennessee Titans currently play their home games in LP Stadium, which is owned by the Nashville and Davidson county government. Despite being hit by a tornado during construction, the stadium opened in time for their first scheduled game in 1999 and has been in use ever since.
There is seating for almost 69,000 and each game played there by the Titans has sold out since the beginning. Fans who want to purchase personal seat licenses or season tickets are subject to a rather long waiting list as well.
The Tennessee Titans are well loved by their fans and their community. Regular wins from this team make them a contender each year. At Titans games, a good time is generally had by all who attend and if you’re visiting the area for a Titans game, be sure to take in some of the other sites. This won’t be a trip you’ll soon forget and the Titans are a team that refuses to be forgotten.
